L Magazine Hospital Programme
Helping children feel connected, creative and supported
L Magazine works with children’s hospitals and play teams to provide something positive for children experiencing illness, hospital stays or time away from school and friends.
Our Hospital Programme offers two different types of support:
• A sponsored, ongoing monthly L Magazine subscription for children who may benefit from longer-term connection
• L’s Little Lift, a one-off magazine gift box that can be given to a child who needs a little boost
Sponsored Monthly Memberships
Ongoing support for children with longer-term health needs
Our sponsored monthly memberships are intended for children who may be experiencing:
• A long hospital stay
• Regular hospital appointments or admissions
• A long-term health condition
• Extended periods away from school
• Isolation from friends and peers
• A need for ongoing creative activities and connection
Once referred and accepted onto the programme, the child receives an L Magazine subscription for an agreed period, funded through business sponsorship.
Each monthly box may include:
• The latest edition of L Magazine
• Creative activities
• Small gifts
• Positive affirmation cards
• A British Sign Language learning card
• Monthly badge-earning opportunities
• Access to our safe Pen Pal community
• Opportunities to have their artwork, stories and ideas published in future editions
The membership gives children something new to look forward to each month, while helping them feel part of a wider creative community.
Refer a Child
Hospital play teams and relevant professionals can refer a child who they feel would benefit from an ongoing sponsored membership.
Please complete our online referral form and provide the requested information about the child’s circumstances and why the membership may be suitable.
All referrals are considered individually and places are subject to available sponsorship.

Our Safe Pen Pal Community
Children receiving a monthly membership can choose to take part in the L Magazine Pen Pal community.
Letters are sent through L Magazine rather than directly between families.
• Home addresses are not shared
• Letters are checked before being forwarded
• Parents or carers are encouraged to review letters before they are sent
• Replies can be returned through the hospital, school or family, depending on the arrangement in place
Taking part is always optional.
The Pen Pal community is designed to encourage handwritten communication, friendship and connection in a supported way.
L’s Little Lift
A one-off box to brighten a child’s day
Not every child needs an ongoing monthly subscription.
L’s Little Lift is a one-off magazine gift box that hospitals can keep on the ward and give to a child whenever staff feel it would be helpful.
It may be suitable for:
• A child having a difficult day
• A child facing an unexpected hospital stay
• A child feeling anxious, bored or isolated
• A child who would benefit from a creative distraction
• A sibling who may also need some extra support
A Little Lift box may include:
• An edition of L Magazine
• Creative activities
• Colouring or puzzle pages
• Positive affirmation cards
• A British Sign Language learning card
• A selection of small gifts
L’s Little Lift is a one-off gift and does not automatically enrol the child into a monthly subscription.
Where staff feel a child would benefit from longer-term support, they can complete our referral form for a sponsored monthly membership.
For Hospitals and Play Teams
Hospitals can work with L Magazine in two ways:
Refer children for monthly support
Complete our referral form for children who may benefit from an ongoing sponsored subscription.
Request L’s Little Lift boxes
Hospitals may request a quantity of one-off Little Lift boxes to keep on the ward and distribute when appropriate.
Availability depends on current donations and business sponsorship.

Business Sponsorship
Our hospital memberships and Little Lift boxes are made possible through sponsorship from businesses and organisations.
Sponsors can fund:
• Monthly subscriptions for individual children
• A group of sponsored hospital memberships
• A supply of L’s Little Lift boxes for a ward or play team
Sponsorship helps children remain connected, creative and included during what can be an isolating time.
Businesses can also receive acknowledgement for their support, subject to the preferences and policies of the hospital involved.

Working With Children’s Hospitals
We have placed L Magazine boxes and magazines with local and regional children’s hospitals and continue to work with play teams to develop the programme in a way that is practical, flexible and centred around the needs of each child.
We understand that every hospital and every child is different, so we are happy to discuss an approach that works for your ward or service.
