Lucy – Founder & CEO
Hi, I’m Lucy — founder of L Magazine.
My journey into creating L comes from both personal experience and a passion for supporting families and young people.
In my twenties, I initially studied to become a midwife before going on to raise my family and work in various part-time roles around my children. During this time, I also volunteered with Home-Start UK, supporting families and seeing first-hand how important community, understanding and connection can be.
When my daughter Scarlett’s journey became more complex, I made the decision to put my career plans on hold and become a stay at home mum and advocate for her needs. Through our experiences navigating ASD, ADHD and life outside of the “typical” path, I became increasingly aware of how many children feel isolated, misunderstood or disconnected — and that ultimately became the inspiration behind L Magazine.
L was created to be a safe, creative and inclusive space where children can feel seen, valued and connected.
I’m also mum and step mum to four other wonderful children:
Holly, who is L Magazine’s Social Media Manager.
Daisy (20), who is studying Psychology at the University of York.
Elliot (15), who is a qualified Football Association referee and will be starting Year 11 in September.
Jesse who is 9 years old and loves basketball and football.
Everything behind L has been built with compassion, lived experience and a genuine understanding of the challenges many families face.
Holly manages our social media and helps bring the L Magazine community to life online.
She holds a Level 2 qualification in Understanding Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and is passionate about creating supportive, inclusive spaces for children and families. Her knowledge and understanding help ensure that everything we share reflects the values at the heart of L Magazine.
Holly is also a proud mum to twin girls who were born at 29 weeks. After spending time in neonatal care, they are now thriving, giving Holly a personal appreciation of the resilience children can show and the importance of community support for families.
She studied at Nottingham University and plays a key role in connecting with our growing community, sharing our story and helping families discover everything L Magazine has to offer.
When she's not working on social media, Holly enjoys running, cycling and spending quality time with her family.
Belle is our much-loved Chief Happiness Officer and the official mascot of L Magazine.
At three years old, this miniature chocolate dachshund is an important member of the team and is never far from the action. Whether she's supervising magazine planning, keeping an eye on packing boxes, or sneaking in a well-earned nap, Belle is always nearby to brighten the day.
Known for her wagging tail, curious nature and love of cuddles, Belle reminds us of the importance of kindness, friendship and taking time to enjoy life's little moments.
Belle's favourite things include long walks, treats, cosy blankets and spending time with her family. She especially enjoys helping test whether the office floor is comfortable enough for afternoon naps!
You'll spot Belle throughout L Magazine, and she can't wait to be part of your family's adventure too. 🐾💛

L Magazine began with my daughter, Scarlett.
Like many families, our journey didn't follow the path we expected. Scarlett lives with PANS, ASD and ADHD, and over time I saw how difficult it could be for children who find themselves outside of typical settings. Whether because of SEND, anxiety, chronic illness, school challenges, or home education, many children can miss out on opportunities to feel connected, included and part of something bigger.
As a parent, I searched for resources that felt positive, accessible and genuinely created with children like Scarlett in mind. I struggled to find something that combined creativity, connection and encouragement in one place.
So I decided to create it.
L Magazine is more than a magazine. It's a monthly experience designed to help children create, connect and be themselves. Every box includes a dyslexia-friendly magazine, opportunities to contribute, collectible badges, inspirational role model cards, BSL sign cards, a safeguarded pen pal community and fun themed surprises.
While L Magazine was inspired by Scarlett's journey, it was created for all children. Whether your child attends school, is home educated, has additional needs, or simply loves being creative, we want every child to feel welcome here.
At its heart, L Magazine is built on a simple belief:
Every child deserves to feel seen, valued and connected.
Thank you for being part of our story.

👉 This is a safe and supported way to connect
⭐WHAT TO WRITE IDEAS
💡 There are a few ideas in our pen pal leaflet (inside your welcome box)
All of this information will be included in our pen pal leaflet which you will receive in your welcome box.
At L Magazine Box, every child has the opportunity to collect something special each month.
Children aged 5–10 can earn a new collectible badge each month by taking part in a simple challenge linked to the magazine. Whether they're exploring outdoors, getting creative, trying a recipe, sharing an idea or learning something new, each badge celebrates participation, curiosity and confidence.
There are no tests, scores or competitions – just opportunities to have a go, build new skills and feel proud of what they've achieved.
Some of our badges include:
As their collection grows, children can look back at all the things they have created, discovered and achieved along the way.
For our older readers, the collection takes a slightly different approach.
Each month, they can earn a collectible animal enamel pin by completing a challenge linked to a positive quality or action. Every animal has been chosen for what it represents, helping to create a meaningful collection over time.
The first pin in the collection is an elephant, earned through an act of kindness. Elephants are known for their strong social bonds, caring behaviour and the way they look after members of their herd.
Future pins will represent qualities such as courage, creativity, curiosity, resilience, teamwork and determination.
Rather than simply collecting pins, readers will be building a collection of reminders about the qualities they have practised and the challenges they have completed.
✨ Collect. Create. Connect. Grow.

One Size Doesn’t Fit Every Child
We currently offer two magazine boxes:
L Magazine Box – recommended for children aged 5–11 years.
L Magazine Box – recommended for children aged 11-16 years.
Our magazines are split into these age groups to help guide your choice, but they’re exactly that – a guide.
Children learn, grow, and engage with the world in different ways. Reading ability, interests, confidence levels, and individual needs can vary hugely, so the suggested ages aren’t strict rules.
Choose the magazine you feel your child will enjoy most. After all, the best magazine is the one that sparks their curiosity, creativity, and excitement when it arrives through the letterbox. ✨📬
To help you decide, we have a "What's inside our magazine?" section and you can explore the types of activities, features, and content included in each magazine.
If you’re unsure which box would be the best fit, please get in touch — we’re always happy to help.
Pick the option that works best for your family.

Confidence, creativity, and self-belief rarely develop overnight. Instead, they grow through regular encouragement, positive experiences, opportunities to reflect, and the chance to try new things over time. That's one of the reasons why receiving something each month can have such a lasting impact on a child.
Children thrive when they experience positive routines and regular opportunities to learn and grow. Small moments repeated over time can help build confidence, strengthen skills, and encourage children to see themselves in a more positive light.
A single activity can be enjoyable and memorable, but ongoing opportunities for creativity, communication, and self-expression can become part of a child's everyday life.
Each month, children receive a carefully designed box packed with opportunities to create, connect, and explore.
Inside, they'll discover a magazine filled with stories, puzzles, challenges, creative activities, and opportunities to share their own ideas and work. Every box also includes gifts, collectable badges, and features designed to encourage curiosity, imagination, communication, and confidence.
Children are invited to take part, contribute content, try new things, and celebrate their own unique interests and talents.
Many children today spend increasing amounts of time online and are constantly exposed to fast-moving content and digital distractions.
L Magazine offers something different.
A hands-on experience that encourages children to read, create, write, solve problems, communicate, and use their imagination. It's something they can hold, revisit, and enjoy at their own pace.
There is something special about receiving something addressed to you.
Having a new magazine, activity, challenge, or badge arrive each month gives children something positive to look forward to and creates a sense of anticipation and excitement.
Many children enjoy collecting their badges, completing activities, sharing their creations, and seeing their interests reflected within the magazine.
L Magazine Box is about more than simply receiving a monthly delivery.
It's about encouraging creativity, building confidence, supporting communication, and helping children feel part of something bigger.
We believe every child deserves opportunities to be heard, celebrated, and inspired. Through stories, activities, pen pals, challenges, collectables, and creative projects, we aim to provide experiences that help children grow in confidence while having plenty of fun along the way.
At L Magazine, our mission is simple:
Create. Connect. Be You.
Everything we include is designed to help children express themselves, explore new ideas, build meaningful connections, and celebrate exactly who they are.

L Magazine Box is designed for all children, but we've carefully considered how to make it accessible and welcoming for children with additional needs too.
We know that every child learns, communicates and engages differently, so we've focused on creating something flexible, inclusive and pressure-free.
Our magazines are printed using a dyslexia-friendly font and clear layouts, helping to make reading more accessible for a wider range of children.
Many activities encourage creativity, imagination and self-expression rather than testing knowledge or expecting a specific outcome.
We've included opportunities throughout the magazine for children to take a moment, doodle, reflect, create and engage in their own way. Not every page needs to be completed, and there's no pressure to rush from one activity to the next.
Children can enjoy L in whatever way suits them. They might complete every activity, choose just one, or simply enjoy reading the magazine. There are no scores, deadlines or expectations – just opportunities to engage in a way that feels right for them.
Our safeguarded pen pal programme offers opportunities to build friendships and connections through letter writing, supported through our relay system.
From creative projects and recipes to puzzles, stories and contributions to the magazine itself, children can engage in the areas that interest them most.
We celebrate different ways of learning, thinking and experiencing the world. Every child should feel that there is a place for them within L.
L Magazine Box was inspired by our own family's experiences of additional needs, school challenges and isolation. While L is for all children, accessibility, inclusion and connection have been at the heart of its design from the very beginning.
Please note: L Magazine Box is not a therapeutic or educational intervention. It is a magazine and activity subscription designed to encourage creativity, confidence, curiosity and connection in an inclusive and accessible way.

At L Magazine, we believe children should have the opportunity to be creators, not just readers.
That's why we offer engaging, interactive workshops designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, encourage communication, and support literacy skills in a fun and inclusive way.
Our workshops are suitable for schools, home education groups, community groups, clubs, libraries, SEND groups, and other organisations working with children.
There is currently no charge for our workshops.
Our workshops give children the opportunity to become part of the creative process behind L Magazine.
Sessions are designed to be flexible and can be adapted for:
• Whole classes
• Small groups
• SEND groups
• Home education groups
• Community organisations
• Libraries
• Clubs and activity groups
• Literacy enrichment sessions
Children are encouraged to share their ideas, create content, develop new skills, and have their voices heard.
Learn how magazines are created, generate ideas, create headlines, vote on features, and help shape content for future issues.
Create characters, stories, comic strips, and imaginative writing pieces that may be considered for publication.
Design a future front cover for L Magazine and learn what makes a magazine stand out.
Create word searches, riddles, quizzes, mazes, jokes, and other activities for children to enjoy.
Explore different fonts, layouts, and accessible design features while learning how reading materials can support different learners.
Discover the joy of letter writing, communication, friendship, and meaningful connections.
Learn basic journalism skills, conduct interviews, and create news stories and articles.
Interview inspiring people from your school, group, or local community and create feature articles celebrating everyday heroes.
Share ideas and opinions about what children would like to see in future editions of L Magazine.
One of the most exciting parts of our workshops is that children's work may be featured in future editions of L Magazine.
Stories, artwork, puzzles, interviews, jokes, ideas, and creative projects may all be considered for publication, giving children the opportunity to become published contributors.
Schools, home education groups, and community organisations may also have the opportunity to be featured in a future edition of L Magazine, showcasing achievements, projects, artwork, stories, and activities.
Our workshops are designed to support:
• Literacy
• Creativity
• Communication skills
• Confidence and self-esteem
• Teamwork and collaboration
• Pupil voice
• Inclusion and accessibility awareness
• Imagination and problem-solving
Most importantly, they provide children with a fun, positive experience where their ideas and creativity are valued.
For your reassurance:
• We hold full public liability insurance.
• Lucy and Holly both hold Enhanced DBS checks.
• Documentation can be provided upon request.
We would love to hear from schools, home education groups, community organisations, libraries, and clubs interested in working with us.
Please get in touch to discuss how we can tailor a workshop to suit the children in your setting.
"The dyslexia friendly font is a fantastic feature and makes the magazine more accessible."
"The pen pal element could be incredibly valuable for children who feel isolated and struggle to make connections and for any child who wants to experience the joy of letter writing, sharing interests, and connecting in a world that often moves too fast."
"I love that the magazine is inclusive for all children while still recognising the unique challenges many SEND families face."
"The badge collection system is such a clever way to build confidence and encourage participation."
"This is exactly the sort of resource many home-educating and school anxious children have been missing."
"I love that it doesn't separate children into different groups. It feels welcoming and inclusive whilst still recognising that some children need a little extra understanding and support."
At L Magazine, we believe that every child deserves to feel supported, understood, and valued.
As our magazine grows, we want to ensure that we are also making a positive difference to families facing challenges beyond the pages of our magazine. That's why each year we choose a charity that aligns with our values and our mission of supporting children and families.
We are proud to announce that during this year, 5% of L Magazine's profits will be donated to PANS PANDAS UK.
PANS PANDAS UK is a charity dedicated to supporting families affected by PANS (Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections).
The charity works tirelessly to:
• Provide information, guidance, and support to affected families.
• Raise awareness of PANS and PANDAS among the public and healthcare professionals.
• Campaign for improved access to diagnosis, treatment, and care.
• Advocate for better understanding of these conditions.
• Support and encourage research into PANS and PANDAS.
We are honoured to support the important work they do and hope our contribution will help them continue providing vital support and resources to families who need them.
Behind every diagnosis is a child, a family, and a story.
Many families affected by PANS and PANDAS face long journeys to obtain answers, support, and appropriate care. By supporting PANS PANDAS UK, we hope to play a small part in helping those families access the information, understanding, and advocacy they deserve.
Every subscription, purchase, and contribution to L Magazine helps us support not only children's creativity and literacy, but also charities making a real difference in the lives of children and families.
Thank you for helping us give back.
